In a nutshell – Sparkling Vintage: Aging Gracefully and Growing Stronger, Bringing People Together to Celebrate the Gift of Life
For a bit of fun, Two lies and a truth
- – I was born in Shanghai
- – I used to own two pet rats
- – I have identical twin sisters and daughters
About Me: My career in the jewellery industry started with traveling across the country. When my twin daughters were born, I began my design business from home on Hayling Island, focusing on bespoke wedding rings. As my business and daughters grew, I took the plunge and opened a boutique and workshop in Southsea in 2015.
Celebrating 25 years in business, I’ve built an incredible team of 8, including 3 full-time Goldsmiths and 2 full-time Designers. Ethical practice and integrity have always been central to my business, earning us the globally recognized Butterfly Mark Accreditation for sustainability from Positive Luxury. We’ve won awards for the best jeweller in Hants and IOW for two consecutive years, as voted by the public. Our goal is to have the best reputation for customer experience and creative jewellery design on the South Coast.
Giving back is essential to me. We have a profit share scheme, donate to local charities like ‘Vista’ and ‘Sam’s Place’, and support global initiatives like Five Talents, which provides microfinance loans to women in Africa and South America.
Collaborating with and supporting local businesses and artists is a big part of our ethos. My business ethos, rooted in my faith in Jesus, drives me to find new and creative ways to build the business while doing good for others.
Joining the Tribe: My journey with the Pamodzi tribe began during my counseling days when I volunteered at Off the Record. I met Debbie Smith there, and we became close friends. Over time, she kept sending me information about Pamodzi, sowing the seeds of my involvement. The connection was solidified when we made Roni’s surprise engagement ring, and after meeting with Roni, I fully understood what Pamodzi was about.
Experience: My career path wasn’t straightforward. After failing all my A-levels, I attended Portsmouth Art College to study 3D design. I pursued what I loved—art—and excelled. I discovered my passion for jewellery during my Foundation course and specialized in metals for two years. I chose an HND instead of a degree for practical experience. This gradual process taught me to follow my passions and embrace the journey.
Life Lessons:
- Overcome Fear of Failure: I used to be afraid of failure, which held me back. Writing goals down and having a business plan have been instrumental in achieving success. Even if things don’t go as planned, having a roadmap is crucial. Remember, if you’re standing still, you’re moving backward.
- Build a Strong Team: Surround yourself with people who have strengths you lack. Diversity in skills and personalities is essential, but everyone must share the same vision. Strong boundaries are necessary; if someone doesn’t share your vision, it might be best for them to move on to a different organization.
Community: School was uninspiring until art school, where a tutor named Jacob encouraged me to pursue jewellery. My husband has always been supportive and provided excellent business and team-building advice. My counseling studies and therapy boosted my confidence, enabling me to open my shop. Embracing risks and learning from experiences have been key to my journey.
Reflect: If I could speak to my younger self from 5-10 years ago, I’d emphasize the importance of boundaries. In recent years, I’ve worked hard on improving my boundaries and addressing codependency in both personal and work life. Facing uncomfortable situations or people head-on is crucial. Avoiding issues only makes them worse and more stressful in the long run.
